Sand casting
is one of the oldest and most versatile metal casting processes used in manufacturing. It involves pouring molten metal into a sand mold to create a desired shape. This method is widely used due to its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and adaptability for producing both small and large metal components.


What is Sand Casting?

Sand casting, also known as sand molded casting, uses sand as the mold material. A pattern, usually made of wood or metal, is used to create a cavity in the sand. Molten metal is then poured into this cavity, cooled, and solidified to form the final product.


The Sand Casting Process

  1. Pattern Making: A replica of the final product is created to form the mold cavity.

  2. Mold Preparation: Sand mixed with a binding agent is packed around the pattern in a mold box (flask).

  3. Core Making (if needed): Cores are inserted into the mold to create hollow sections in the casting.

  4. Pouring: Molten metal is poured into the mold cavity.

  5. Cooling: The metal solidifies within the mold.

  6. Shakeout: The sand mold is broken apart, and the casting is removed.

  7. Cleaning and Finishing: The casting is cleaned, and excess material is removed.
